Complete Quiz 8 – Punctuation

a. Read Chapter 6 (again!) of Hicks, English for Journalists (Punctuation) to prepare for this quiz.
b. Complete the quiz so that you get 100% correct (you will be able to make numerous attempts).
c. Reflect on this briefly on your blog – Did you find the questions difficult? Did you have any problems in specific areas?

Just when you think you have it all figured out - you find out you don't.

A possessive, a contraction and distinguishing singular from plural are all instances where an apostrophe is used and that sounds simple enough.  Right? So why is it so difficult, to get it exactly right?

Who knows, one day Bill Gates might enhance Word so that it will correct every situation for us; until then though, I suppose I had better read some more and gain a firm grasp on it all.

  1. Hi Vicki, (Is it ok if I call you that?)

I read this chapter three times and there are some things that I haven't fully understood.

Hopefully, you may know. :-) Could you look at my misunderstandings and if you can, could you enlighten me about them.

I also wanted to say that your blog is one of my favourite. It is so neat and everything is easy to find...very user friendly.

    Cheers, Anna.

    1. Hi Anna,

I know that when you type in WORD if you use the dash between two words you can choose which dash to use; the 'en' or the 'em':

John Smith - the man's a fool - is staying here.
John Smith – the man’s a fool – is staying here.

According to 'House Style' just means the publication you work for may have a preference so you would need to seek clarification on which to use with them.
