Practical: Plan your Stories and Prepare for Ass 2
This activity requires you to plan, and record your planning journey on your blog. The steps are:
- a. Identify two possible events that you could cover for Ass 2.
I chose the ABC Open event "TWO" because I know one of my fellow students is planning to do Emergency Services Day.
- b. Plan how you will cover each event. Do some research and write a background paragraph on these events. Record this on your blog (Eg. I plan to cover X event. The event is held on *. It’s annual, and…).
- c. Review whether you need to get accredited for either event (if so, start the process), because some events restrict cameras. It’s usually not hard to get accredited, so we encourage you to do so if needed.
- d. Identify the main parts of the event (eg. Speech/launch/game/presentation).
It is a photography event. There will be a short introduction then participants will be given lists of items they need to photograph.
- e. Identify the people you will try to get a short quote and photo from/of to record on Twitter (eg. one family, one organizer, one participant).
I have already interviewed the organiser, so on the day I will be photographing and collecting quotes from participants. The event, while physically held in a location requires all participants to upload all images publicly to Instagram with a # tag of the event name and location. So, I plan to take photos, of people taking photos (if that makes sense) then dragging their #ABCOpenTwo images into my Storify.
- f. Watch the ‘Why you should plan’ short video on the course website. On your blog, list the three main points from Kate as to why planning is important.
"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" - Benjamin Franklin.
- g. You should provide a summary of your planning on your blog.
Who can attend?
Anyone with a smartphone and a public Instagram account who are currently in Queensland can take part in the TWO InstaMeet.
Who is the target audience for this event?
People who love taking photos with their smartphones and enjoy meeting like-minded people.
What do we have to do?
At the start everyone is given a list of things that they must take photos of during the duration of the InstaMeet. All these images have to be then hash-tagged to collate the images in one virtual folder online. But if people can’t attend their locally organised TWO InstaMeet, they can still get involved over August 2 and 3 by taking photos of anything that represents TWO by adding the hashtag #abcopentwo to their Instagram images.
What is the event for?
The events are run in conjunction with ABC Open’s monthly Snapped themes. These are photographic challenges where people can submit images they have taken specific to that month’s theme: https://open.abc.net.au/projects/long-exposure-61po3lc#/discover
The TWO event was organised by the ABC Open producers in Queensland as a way to unite the state during a weekend of photography.
What makes these events successful?
Everyone loves coming along to these events because it’s not only a way they can challenge themselves photographically and learn some new digital skills, but they also get to socialise and meet new people who also love taking photos.
Why the # tags?
By adding the pound sign to the relevant search terms, it turns the word into a searchable link or, in this case, the image. ABC Open use a specific hashtag with each month’s Snapped theme so all the images that are ‘hash-tagged’ can be collated together online.
Where is the event being held?
The next InstaMeet in Capricornia will be held at the Fig Tree Markets in Yeppoon, but anyone across the state can get involved. They either have to contact their local ABC Open producer for details (https://open.abc.net.au/openregions ) or they can jump onto the TWO Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/270827499785597/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming).
How many people attend these events?
The last event that was held in Rockhampton in June had 17 people attend. There have been three InstaMeets held in the Capricornia region so far and more people attend each time. For the TWO weekend event, we are hoping that hundreds of people across QLD will get involved.
I have requested a schedule for the day however I do not think there will be one for this event.
Arrive early on the day. Ensure that both my phone and my camera are fully charged. Take spare memory card and battery just in case.
EDIT: 21/08/2014
I have now completed two Storify projects, you can view them here:
Welcome to Australia (Multicultural Day in Rockhampton)
TWO (ABC Snapped Instameet Event)
I am in two minds as to which to submit for assessment so please, let me know your thoughts?

Hi Victoria,
ReplyDeleteYour plan looks, neat and well thought out. After reading your last sentence before 'h.' I think that's a good idea taking a camera (fully charged too). I'll add this to my checklist and search for my camera before the event happens.
Cheers,
Anna
